  25. Yes you can use one drive.

  27. A 4 gig at current compression will get you approx. 25 minutes of 
  28. standard quality (Approx. beta?) and 65 mins of SVHS(?)

  30. Not every drive of every model will work.  However, a drive I found out 
  31. will work is the Micropolis 4 gig AV drive. (PPerhaps not all, but at 
  32. least I installed for a fellow video person DID work beautifully)

  36. Yes Lightwave will record anims, but it is not true 24 bit, it's kinda a 
  37. cross between a switcher anim and 24 bit... (I'm told by Newtek anyway)

  39. There are some bugs in it in that if too much moves on the screen at the 
  40. same time, you get flashing fields in the anim (basically makes them 
  41. useless.  I have rendered a dozen or so anims, and on a few, I've has to 
  42. render a second version in hopes that it wouldn't flash in the same 
  43. place, and I could piece the good parts together.

  45. You can install the Flyer yourself, (the new .94 install is mucj better 
  46. than the older versions)  but if your not comfortable in removing boards 
  47. and disassembling them (to add new parts) then you may wish to have a 
  48. dealer do it for you. (it's not hard, but is a two to threee hour process)

  50. No perts of software are 4.0 (darn close, but still a 3.94 versions)  
  51. just bugs & Flyer amenities (like cutting room) are left to be added.

  53. (OF COURSE CG IS NOT FUNCTIONAL YET)  The program is and you can create 
  54. CG pages and stills, you just can't play them in sequence and key them.

  56. Final release is due by end of quarter - (that's March 31 to you and me)  
  57. but it doesn't mean for sure that it'll all be done by then.

  61. (I paid $2800 each for my 4 gigs!!!)   As I said before if you can get 
  62. drives for $2000 that are guaranteed to work, GET 'EM and let me know 
  63. where you got 'em.

  66. Mu suggestion... buy your Flyer... and 1 hard drive (4 gig).  To begin 
  67. with, you CAN install the hard drive in the 5-1/4 drive bay in the 4000.  
  68. If you do, leave the face plate off the case and have a fan blow air into 
  69. it.  The drives run real hot and should be adequately cooled. (A small 
  70. table fan (real small) will blow air right in there and keep your drive 
  71. cool enough. (That'll save ya $200 bucks)

  73. You have to have a CD ROM unless you have a dealer install the software 
  74. for you.  After the install, you do not need the CD ROM to run the Flyer.

  76. One last note, I found a nice 4 bay SCSI case for the hard drives for $150.

  78. DALCO Electronics - 800-445-5342  it has 2 external SCSI connectors.  One 
  79. for input the other for chaining another box.  Simply cut the ribbon 
  80. cable in half (between the internal SCSI connectors to make 'em both 
  81. inputs.  For $15 bucks more they'll make a third cable for your audio 
  82. drive that will give you a third inpput on the back.  It had three fans 
  83. and a 200 watt power supply ($150 to $200 less than a drive in and pretty 
  84. much the same thing)  Final not:  get the nice pigtail cable set for the 
  85. Flyer... $100 or so.  real nice an will save you alot of headaches...

  88. Again you only need the Flyer Card and one drive in your 4000 to start 
  89. animating. (I know, that's how I started using it) add a $200 SCSI 
  90. s\drive for Audio, and you can make your first demo (cuts only) with 
  91. sound effects, music bed and narration!
